First phase of Line 11 of the Madrid Metro, Diagonal Line, will incorporate thermal activation as power source
22 March 2022
With the approval of the project to extend Madrid Metro Line 11, the Diagonal Line, works will begin this November to add 33.5 kilometres and 14 new stations to the current line.
The Information Survey and Construction Project for the first of the five phases of this extension (the section joining Plaza Elíptica and Conde de Casal) was drafted by Meta Engineering and covers 7.5 kilometres of tracks and construction of 5 new stations.
The construction project, taking into consideration the limitations imposed by the Environmental Impact Assessment, incorporates the use of thermal activation energy to power the future bus station at Conde de Casal. Thermal activation of the infrastructure and reusing residual energy are an important step for the Community of Madrid in using renewable energy in urban underground infrastructures.
Taking advantage of this clean, renewable energy source is quite an achievement. Madrid Subterra believes this milestone set by Metro Line 11 will be a turning point, helping make this energy source a normal part of all underground infrastructure projects.
