Meta Engineering awarded Badalona Metro Line 1 extension study contract
19th April 2021
Infraestructures de la Generalitat de Catalunya S.A.U., a public company dedicated to the design and promotion of infrastructures in Catalonia, has awarded Meta Engineering the Metro Line 1 extension study between the stations of Lloreda-Sant Crist and Badalona Rodalies.
This second phase of the L1 extension will include a section of approximately 2.7 kilometres and will include the Bufalà station in connection with Metro Line 2, Pompeu Fabra and Badalona Rodalies, where an interchange will be built with ADIF’s R1 Rodalies line.
The study will include defining and evaluating the different alternatives for the infrastructure, track and overhead line works, taking into account all affected service replacements, expropriations, urban development and landscaping, provisional traffic diversions and other possible impacts on the railway operation and other lines during the works.
This new project is an addition to the one that Meta Engineering was awarded a few months ago for the preliminary development project for Metro Line 1 between Fondo and Lloreda-Sant Crist, which includes two new stations.
The project involves the construction of a 1.8-kilometre section of the L1 tunnel extension in the North Badalona neighbourhoods to serve the Montigalà and Lloreda-San Crist areas. There are also plans to build new shunting yards and depots to cater for the increased operating frequency and a shunting line.
The line’s route has been laid out to coincide with the corridor’s continuation towards the stations of Bufalà, Badalona Pompeu Fabra and Badalona Rodalies. The preliminary design will include defining and assessing the entire infrastructure of the tunnel, stations, workshops and depots, track and overhead line, shunting line and architecture for equipping the stations, as well as the impact and replacements deriving from its implementation.
The forecasts estimate that the new five stations in Badalona will attract around 40,000 passengers a day, making it a decisive infrastructure for urban mobility development and helping to significantly improve the connection between Badalona and the more central areas of the Barcelona Metro.
